Our story: the tower of the Donati Family
Our tower has its roots deep in the Middle Ages. It originally consisted of two towers, belonging to the Ricci and Donati families. The latter is linked to Gemma Donati, the wife of Dante Alighieri, the famous Florentine poet and author of the Divine Comedy. At the time, Florence’s medieval towers were symbols of power and prestige: they rose above the city skyline, showcasing the influence of the great families.
Over the centuries, the tower witnessed the clashes and rivalries between Guelphs and Ghibellines and came under the ownership of some of Florence’s most influential families, from the Donati to the Ghiberti. It lived through centuries of feuds, civil wars, and urban transformations, yet has always preserved its identity.
Today, after a meticulous restoration, it shines once again as one of Florence’s historic residences, maintaining its medieval charm while opening its doors to contemporary hospitality.
